Are you moving to a new city soon and not sure what to take with you? I’ve lived in Istanbul, New York, Seattle, Bali and Dublin and over the years I’ve learned to take less, in fact when I moved to Indonesia for a year, I only took a carry-on and backpack.
Whether you’re relocating for love, a job, to go to school, to pursue a passion, or simply for a new adventure, there is no need to be overwhelmed. This is the ultimate guide that answers all your packing questions and more.
Moving Packing List
Sentimental Items
Sentimental items are anything to that we attach emotion and meaning. These are things that will help you when you start missing home – like photographs, jewellery, a coffee mug that was gifted by your niece or nephew, or Blankets.
When it comes to sentimental items, I don’t recommend heading out to buy now, rather take things you already own. This is a great way to save money and not overpack.
Important Documents
Whether you’re going to work as a digital nomad for a time period or permanently relocating, there are important documents you should always take with you like:
- Passport
- Visa and Work Permit
- Tax documents and old filings
- Medical records
- Marriage license
- Insurance policies
- Copy of your will(s)
- If you have children, take their birth certificates and academic records
It’s always important to be prepared. Depending on the country you are going to, your immigration officer may need to provide these documents. Shipping these documents with your other cargo is not advisable as the documents can get damaged or lost in transit. Bring these documents in your carry-on luggage.
Practical Clothes
You don’t need to take all your clothes. Focus on the basics, whatever else you might need, you can probably purchase wherever you go.
